The Times I worked the Street Corner

Sunday after church I went and stood on the street corner and waved down cars. Now with that simple statement, a million thoughts flood your mind and questions about what the heck I am doing here in Georgia inevitably descend upon your subconscious.

But allow me to put all those thoughts to rest and say that it is nothing like you are thinking.

Yes, I did go and stand on the street corner….at the end of the road that leads to our office complex.

Yes, I did wave at every car that passed, but in an attempt to invite them to join us at the office for a fun-filled, wet adventure celebrating who we are and what God has done in our lives.

Now that I have your attention, here’s the full story and the real reason behind why I stand on street corners and wave down cars.

Twice in my time here in Georgia working with Adventures in Missions, we have invited our community into our space.  We have opened our doors for our neighbors to get to know us.  Many people in our area have never heard of us because we are partially hidden away in the woods north of town.  You generally have to be looking for us to find us.  So in an effort to get to know our community and have our community get to know us, we have hosted 2 different events.

The first of those events was back in September and was a conference about hearing the voice of God in our daily lives.  The second of these events was yesterday and was a open house/fall festival for our neighbors to have some fun and get to know us in the process.

For both of these events, I was able to be part of the serve team and be one of the first faces to welcome our visitors into our space. I stood in the rain on both occasions and waved at every car that passed by and gave the first round of parking instructions.

It might seem like a small, insignificant thing but it makes a difference.  We were almost like the Wal-Mart greeters, but for greeters for Jesus. I enjoy it.  It’s a way to set the mood and stage for what God wants to do in the space.  It makes people smile to see someone standing in the rain waving at them.  It makes them feel welcomed.  It gives me a chance to pray over them as they drive by, smile, and wave.  I pray that God would move in their lives.  That He would pour out His blessings upon them.  That they would encounter Him in a new and fresh way.

So next time there is a need for someone to stand on the street corner and wave down the cars, I will be at the front of the line of volunteers.

My final deadline for this semester of $3,950 is fast approaching.  I am still in need of raising $1,100 by November 11 to continue my work here of empowering and creating ways and opportunities for others to be the tangible hands and feet of Jesus around the world! Will you help me reach this goal?
